On Merdeka Day, a team of seven divers from Miri, Brunei, and Singapore collaborated to clean the Barracuda dive site at the Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park, removing around 70kg of ghost nets from a depth of nearly 24 meters. This effort, organized by Iqbal Abdollah of Future Ocean Borneo, marked their eighth ghost net removal operation in Miri waters. Despite the risks of deep diving, the divers successfully cleared the nets in two dives, supported by sponsors like PREVELD and volunteers.
The successful cleanup not only restored the Barracuda dive site but also underscored the urgent need for collaborative action to address marine pollution. Thong Wei Chang, director of PREVELD, praised the team's achievement and emphasized the devastating impact of ghost nets on coral reefs and marine life.
